Cedar Rapids, September 9, 2013
The Science Center will be moving from its current Lindale Mall location to its new permanent home at 5824 Council Street NE Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.
Science Center Executive Director Norah Hammond notes “As one of the last flood affected organizations in the city, we want to first take the opportunity to thank the community, our loyal supporters and committed staff for supporting us as we worked through a series of temporary locations. The fact that thousands of families were able to find us and participate in our programming during the last few years has proven the importance of our mission. Today we firmly plant roots in a facility that will be conducive to fulfilling the mission of informal STEM education and sparking curiosity in young minds. We have great plans for the future. With the continuation of our existing programs, exciting designs for the future, and our new home our vision is becoming a reality. Transforming our new space will be an evolution over time, but ultimately we will have a great resource the community can enjoy and benefit from in new and different ways. We are not simply rebuilding our former facility, but reinventing our entire organization. We look forward to sharing more information about our exciting next steps with the community in the coming months.”
In addition to its core exhibits, the Center plans to expand programs for kids and adults. The new facility will also include a large maker space, which will be a hub for creating, innovating, designing and building. The space is intended to be a resource for area do-it-yourselfers, creatives, entrepreneurs, inventors, and free thinkers looking to develop new ideas, new connections and new opportunities and will include equipment like 3D printers, plasma and CNC machines, laser cutters and more.
The move will begin the week of September 9th and span multiple days. Some downtime for the center is expected during this period.
